EU has 'important role' in British employment law, says Foreign Secretary
Brussels has an “important role” in setting Britain’s employment laws, the Foreign Secretary said yesterday, in comments hinting the UK will not seek an opt-out of measures such as the Working Time Directive.
Philip Hammond reassured a Labour MP who asked for a “guarantee” that there will be no “dilution” of EU employment legislation.

Aisling Neidhard says she was fired from Dublin restaurant for being pregnant. A woman has claimed she was unfairly dismissed from award-winning Thornton’s Restaurant in Dublin for being pregnant.
Chef Kevin Thornton, whose restaurant had a Michelin star for two decades until this year, owns and runs the restaurant with his wife and business partner Muriel Thornton.
Aisling Neidhard, who worked in the office of the restaurant in the Fitzwilliam Hotel, claims Ms Thornton asked during her job interview if as a newlywed she planned to have children soon.
Age discrimination: Former Dunnes worker awarded £40,000
A Northern Ireland woman who claimed Dunnes Stores discriminated against her because of her age has been awarded £40,000 in settlement.
Gloria Dunbar had worked as a security manager for Dunnes (Bangor Ltd) since 2005.
When she was told to leave, she was 63 years old and working at the store's Annadale Embankment, Belfast branch.
Settling the case, Dunnes did not accept that it had broken equality legislation.
