With just about three weeks to go until the UK officially Brexit’s from Europe, preparations for no deal continue within the judicial system with the government now issuing adjustments to court Civil Procedure Rules in the event of ‘no deal’.(1) These changes will accommodate the misapplication of the Brussels Regulation and Lugano Convention amongst other changes. As we continue to march perilously close to the cliff edge of a ‘no deal’ the hospitality industry is continuing to report the negative impact it is already experiencing and making dark predictions for what will come if the issue isn’t resolved.(2) The industry has always traditionally leaned heavily on EU Nationals with between 12-14% of the industry from Europe. The predictions for a no deal UK seem stark indeed.
As if Brexit alone wasn’t enough to consider the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development has recently hinted that that the increasing move towards flexible working may be having a detrimental effect on the UK economy.(3) What with Brexit, Global Warming, being alive in the 6th Mass Extinction Event and discovering atheism, it’s enough to get you down.
But if there’s one thing about good old ‘blighty’, it’s that we know how to keep our spirits up in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds like the blitz. Take for example the recent landmark ruling involving the Cheshire Police Force who were found to have discriminated against a heterosexual white man in their recruitment policy.(4)
