As the annual uprating of benefits and awards through April reaches its conclusion we turn our heads to what may be on the horizon later this year. Firstly, the issue of a return to Tribunal Fees is back on the A La Carte Menu and this time the general feeling is there is gathering momentum to see fees return.(1) It seems ultimately that it’s one thing recognising human rights, but it’s another thing entirely to make them financially viable. If rumour mills in the age of conspiracy are to be believed then Philip Hammond seems to be considering the OECD median earnings level as a target for a future rise in the National Living Wage. If this is to be believed it would mean an increase in the existing level of £8.21 per hour to £9.61 by 2020, making it the highest minimum wage level in the world.(2)
